Glassell Junior School of Art Scholarships Awarded

Presbyterian School is proud to announce that two students, Elena Portz and Cal Huntley, have been awarded endowed elementary school scholarships by the Glassell Junior School. Through the generosity and support of many Houstonians interested in promoting quality art in Houston, the Glassell Junior School is able to award young artists endowed scholarships to the Glassell Junior School. In order to compete for the endowed scholarships, all students, ages 10-12, were invited to participate in an outdoor sketching competition.  Under the supervision of the Glassell Junior School faculty, students were asked to sketch the surrounding area of the Lillie and Hugh Roy Cullen Sculpture Garden for an hour and a half. Student sketches were then submitted to the Glassell School for review. After careful consideration by the Glassell Junior School faculty, fifteen students were awarded scholarships, two of them being Presbyterian School students.

The Glassell School of Art offers a variety of classes, workshops, and educational opportunities for students diverse in age, interests, experience, and needs. Founded in 1979, the Glassell School serves as the teaching wing of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Today you can pick from nearly 100 classes and workshops in all media—from painting and drawing to jewelry making, photography, and art history. Classes are held at the Studio School for Adults and at the Glassell Junior School.

The Glassell Junior School is the only museum facility in the country dedicated to art classes for children. The Glassell Junior School offers art instruction for children ages 4-18 through year-round classes and workshops from multimedia to cartooning, from miniatures to wearable art. This year's enrollment numbers more than 4,000, including those students who receive tuition scholarships. Some of these scholarships are awarded for special talent through programs such as an annual sketching competition; others are based on need, which ensures that young people throughout the community have equal access to art education.
