One community relationship that Presbyterian School has engaged in throughout the school’s history is with the Nehemiah Center, a ministry supported by First Presbyterian Church. Located on Fannin Street, just blocks away from the school, the Nehemiah Center is a non-profit organization serving over 130 children daily through academic, emotional, cultural, social and spiritual enrichment. The Nehemiah Center offers a preschool program during the day, after-school programs for lower, middle and high school students, effective parenting programs and adult literacy programs (i.e., GED, ESL, etc.). All programs are structured to address personal and family concerns that impede spiritual, emotional and academic development. The mission of the center is to be “neighbors helping neighbors create a safe haven in which children are motivated, inspired and equipped to realize their God-given potential”. Presbyterian School has both served and been served by the Nehemiah Center in many ways. Presbyterian School students have strengthened their Spanish skills through interactions with native Spanish-speaking children at the Center. The Nehemiah Center children have visited PresbyterianSchool to participate in special school events such as Christmas Workshop, Rodeo Day and Kindergarten Circus. But it’s not just students who are getting to know one another! Presbyterian School teachers, administrators and trustees are also actively engaged in the Nehemiah Center through tutoring, classroom mentoring and service on the Nehemiah Center Board of Trustees. Presbyterian School is eager to continue building and maintaining the “Bridge Across Main Street” which connects the school with the Nehemiah Center.
