After more than 40 years of serving in education, our current Head of School, Mr. Raymond E. Johnson, will be retiring this year.  Mr. Johnson’s passion for education has helped Presbyterian School become what it is today.

Preserving the mission of Presbyterian School and hiring a new Head of School are the most important tasks that our Board of Trustees undertakes.  On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am pleased to announce that Dr. Mark Carleton, currently Associate Headmaster/Academic Dean and Director of the Upper School at Darlington School in Rome, Georgia, has accepted the position of Head of School at Presbyterian School beginning July 1, 2009.

After a thorough and nationwide search, Dr. Carleton received the unanimous support of both the Search Committee and the Board of Trustees as the future leader of our wonderful school.  He is eager to take on his new challenges and build upon the foundation of our current Head of School, Ray Johnson.  Dr. Carleton shared these sentiments as he accepted the position of Head of Presbyterian School, "I am deeply honored by the news that you have selected me as your next Head of School.  Laurel and I are both humbled and excited by the opportunity to serve not only the School but the larger community as well.  What a blessing to look forward to working together to build on the incredible strengths and traditions of such a fine school."

Dr. Carleton is a proven leader in every area of independent school life.  He exhibits an energy and excitement that inspires everyone around him to achieve excellence and seek innovation.  He has a genuine love of children and, like our teachers and administration, has dedicated his professional life to teaching and enriching the lives of students.

To all of those who participated in the Head of School search process, we thank you for your dedication of time and energy, as well as for your feedback.  The input from faculty, staff, administration, parents and trustees provided important information and data. We strongly believe that this deliberate and mission driven process has brought us the right person to lead Presbyterian School.
To the Search Committee, we thank you for your hard work and for representing the School in the finest possible light.  We are grateful for your intense commitment of time, energy, wisdom and thoughtfulness.  And finally, I would like to thank our current Head of School, Ray Johnson.  Ray played an important role in helping all of the candidates better understand the many strengths of our school, and we are grateful for his inspiring leadership of Presbyterian School.

On behalf of the Board and Search Committee, I want to conclude by saying that we are very excited about the School’s future.  We are confident that Dr. Carleton’s array of talents, depth of experience and wisdom will serve the School and all members of the Presbyterian School community with great distinction.

Sincerely,
Janet F. Lionberger
Chairman, Board of Trustees and Head of School Search Committee
