Story Hour at the Museum of Fine Arts
Students of Presbyterian School enjoy the opportunity to attend the Museum of Fine Arts each week for story hour. The students are so familiar with walking across the street to the Museum of Fine Arts, that they no longer see the Museum as a strange building, but rather view it as an extension of their school. Each week a class from Presbyterian School experiences a docent led story hour. Museum docents engage Presbyterian School students with a children’s book as they sit in front of artistic masterpieces. The docents lead engaging discussions with the students and help them see the relationships between some of their very favorite children’s stories and the artwork displayed throughout the Museum. The experiences at the Museum of Fine Arts have given Presbyterian School students an opportunity to make connections between written and visual art forms, thereby enriching their knowledge base and appreciation of both classic literature and modern art. This past week a class of three year old students walked over to the Museum of Fine Arts and viewed the African Gold exhibit. These Early Childhood students got to learn about ancient linguist staffs and how they were used to tell stories in Africa. Appropriately fitting to this discussion and art viewing was the reading of Gail E. Haley’s children’s story, entitled “A Story, A Story”.
