Partnering with Heifer International Organization, students learned how they could empower families in Armenia.

PS Partners with Heifer International

Presbyterian School sixth grade students began the school year with a history unit on global poverty and the country of Armenia. As students learned about the history of Armenia they uncovered the modern day problems that the country faces. Partnering with Heifer International Organization, students learned how they could empower families in Armenia to turn hunger and poverty into hope and prosperity… one animal at a time.

Heifer International Organization helps to bring sustainable agriculture and commerce to areas with a long history of poverty. The animals provided through Heifer International provide both food and reliable income, as agricultural projects such as milk, eggs and honey can be traded or sold at market. When many families gain this new sustainable income, it brings new opportunities for building schools, creating agricultural cooperatives, forming community savings and funding small businesses.

The sixth grade class hosted a Read-A-Thon to kick off a “Read to Feed” program to benefit Heifer International. Each student set a six-week reading goal and family members supported their child's goal by pledging money to Heifer International. Through this Read-A-Thon, students raised $5,166.50 for Heifer International. Thanks to the generosity of many, students were able to sends animals to Latin America, Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America. The animals included were oxen, donkeys, water buffalo, cows, sheep, goats, bees, chicks, and rabbits. They were also able to purchase a llama, which was a special request from the students.


Before partnering with Heifer International, students  learned about the geography, economy, government, history, and agricultural problems and solutions in Armenia.  They prepared Keynote presentations about their learning.  In music class, the students learned "We are the World" and in technology club students filmed the singers and produced an iMovie.  The students’ study on global poverty focused on four different learning areas. One learning area focused on the major reasons for poverty in a country.  Another area focused on national symbols of Armenia through an art project that completed mosaics of the national symbols. A third area helped students learn about how Heifer International sponsored agriculture and ecology clubs that help people lift themselves out of poverty.  The last learning area guided students through the problems of deforestation, how it affects the soil, and how compost enriches the soil.  After discussing these issues, the students composted two of the garden areas in the School’s Outdoor Education Campus and planted native flowers in the beds.
