Join Presbyterian School at the Houston Kids Triathlon

Sunday, April 13, 2014

7:30 a.m. (race begins for students 6- 10 years old)
10:00 a.m. (race begins for students 10- 15 years old)

Every triathlon consists of 4 components – swimming, biking, running and transitions. At the Houston Kids Triathlon, kids will only race against other kids in their same age group. They utilize a time trial start in the Uinversity of Houston pool, meaning each racer will enter the pool one at a time. As they complete their swim, they will enter the transition area to begin the bike portion of the race. After completing their ride, they will reenter transition, drop-off their bike and exit onto the run course. The run is the final portion of the race. Computerized timing chips are used to track each participant throughout each part of the race. Below are the actual race distances for each of the age groups.

The Minimum RACE AGE (the child's age as of 12/31/2013) is 6 years old. On the other end of the spectrum, anyone turning 16 before December 31, 2013 will not be allowed to race. Age guidelines are established by the USAT.

For Junior Division, participants ages 6-10 years old:  Swim is 100 yards, Bike is 3 miles, and the Run is 1/2 mile

For Senior Division, participants ages 11-15 years old: Swim is 200 yards, Bike is 6 miles, and the run is 1 mile

The Houston Kids Triathlon will be the largest kids triathlons in the U.S.A. Register soon, because there is a limited number of spaces available and the triathlon will sellout.  Presbyterian School will receive $10 back for each student who designates they are part of the PRESBYTERIAN SCHOOL team on their registration form.  Former students and friends of the School can also sign up as part of the Presbyterian School team.

Kids Triathlon has recently partnered with Reason2Race for those children who want to go one step further and use their race experience to help raise money for their favorite charity.  One of the reasons they added this element was because of a Houston family who has done the Houston Kids triathlon in the past that has had 2 of their 3 children recently diagnosed with a rare, fatal disease (GAN - Giant Axonal Neuropathy).

This family has twins and the healthy twin son actually did a 1/2 ironman distance race (1.2 mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1 miles) in November. He was 12 at the time and did it in honor of his siblings. He asked supporters to pledge a dollar amount for every mile that he raced.  To date, they have raised over $100,000 for www.hannahshopefund (the non-profit whose sole mission is to find a cure for GAN)

However, even though his 1/2 Ironman is complete, the family's race to TRIumph over GAN has just begun.  While the original goals were to increase awareness of GAN and raise funds for research, along the way, they also received the unexpected blessing of teaching children to have compassion for others. If your child is interested in helping either www.JustinsTriumph.org or another charitable organization, please visit:http://reason2race.com/join/hannahshope/
