Winter Sports Preview

We are looking forward to the beginning of our winter sports season on Monday, October 29. This winter, we will offer teams in: 

  • Boys Basketball
  • Girls Basketball
  • Boys Soccer
  • Girls Soccer
  • Coed Swimming
  • Boys Wrestling

Students will be asked in PE if they would like to participate in winter sports and specifically which sport they would like to join.

Required Athletic Physical Examination Form


The Athletic Physical Examination Form is required for participation in sports at Presbyterian School. Students are not allowed to begin practice until this form is complete. These forms are part of the 2018-19 Required School Forms and distributed and collected by Magnus via the School website Parent Portal.  If you have questions regarding this form, please contact Registrar, Judy Ligon, at jligon@pshouston.org

Boys Basketball

Coaches: Darnell Cleary and Steven Spears (8th), Eric Martin (7th,) Ryan Hertlein and Mac Rowe (6th)
 
Practices: Practice will begin on October 29 and be held Monday-Friday. The location of practice for all 6th-8th grade boys' teams will rotate between the Grand Hall, Mini-Gym and South Main Baptist Church Gym located just down Main Street. Athletes practicing at South Main will be transported to and from practice via bus. Pick-up for all teams will be in Palm Court. Due to limited space, practice times will vary between teams and will be given to 6th-8th parents/students separately. All basketball practice information will also be listed on the Athletic Calendars on the School website. 

Parent Meeting: October 29, at 5:45 p.m. in LC 181

Required Gear: Boys need to wear the PS physical education t-shirt and shorts sold at Sue Mills Uniform to practice daily.

Girls Basketball 

Coaches: Ann Horne (8th), Beth Spearman (7th), Sam Murray (6th)

Practices: Practice will begin on October 29 and be held Monday-Friday. The location of practice for all 6th-8th grade girls' teams will rotate between the Grand Hall and Mini-Gym. Pick-up for all teams will be in Palm Court. Due to limited space, practice times will vary between teams and will be given to 6th-8th parents/students separately. All basketball practice information will also be listed on the Athletic Calendars on the School website. 

Parent Meeting: October 29, at 4:30 p.m. in LC 181

Boys Soccer 

Coaches: Maximo Mota (Head Coach) and Carlos Baltodano

Practices: Practice will begin October 29 and be held Monday-Friday at the OEC until 4:30 p.m. The team is transported to and from the OEC via bus and will return to Palm Court for pick-up at 4:45 p.m.

Parent Meeting: October 29, at 5:00 p.m. in LC 181

Required Gear: Players need to wear the PS physical education t-shirt and shorts sold at Sue Mills Uniform to practice daily. The boys need a good pair of soccer cleats and an outdoor suit for inclement weather. We request that the outdoor suit be consistent with Presbyterian colors (blue or black).

Girls Soccer 

Coaches: Alvaro Baltodano (Head Coach) and Veronica Espino
 
Practices: Practice begins October 29 and will be held Monday-Friday at the OEC until 4:30 p.m. The team is transported to and from the OEC via bus and will return to Palm Court for pick-up at 4:45 p.m.
 
Parent Meeting: October 29, at 5:00 p.m. in LC 181

Coed Swimming

Coach: Elisa Cardnell (Head Coach), Sandy Anderson, Linda Parrish
 
Practices: Practice begins October 31 and will be held two times per week at the Rice University outdoor swimming pool until 4 p.m. The team is transported to and from the Rice Pool via bus and will return to Palm Court for pick-up at 4:15 p.m. 

Swimming possesses a unique status, as our students are allowed to participate in swimming and one other sport during the winter season.  
 
Parent Meeting: November 1 at 4:15 p.m. in Palm Court
 
Required Gear: Swimmers will need a warm-up suit for inclement weather days.

Boys Wrestling

Coach: Steve Woods (former US National team member and Olympic Training Center resident athlete)
 
Practices: We will field a wrestling team this winter. Practices begin on October 29.  Practices will be conducted each day after school at the OEC. Students are dismissed at 2:50 p.m. and ride the bus to the OEC for practice which ends at approximately 4:30 p.m. Students will return to the Main Campus at 4:45 p.m.
 
Parent Meeting: The parent meeting is to be determined and can be seen on our website.
 
Required Gear: Boys will need kneepads, headgear, wrestling apparel, and wrestling shoes.
 
 



League Affiliation

Presbyterian School participates in the Houston Junior Preparatory Conference (HJPC) and operates the athletic program within the league bylaws and regulations.  Other members of HJPC include: Annunciation Orthodox School, Duchesne Academy, First Baptist Academy, John Cooper School, Kinkaid School, River Oaks Baptist School, St. Francis Episcopal Day School, St. John's School, St. Michael's School, Second Baptist School, and The Village School.
