Summer Conditioning & Basketball
Posted 05/16/2014 12:56PM

Since summer temperatures in Houston are so extreme, Presbyterian School suggests a regimen of physical exercise to prepare students for the rigors of fall sports. Simply jogging three days a week during the mornings or evenings when temperatures are not so high is a matter of wisdom. Attending summer CES training is the best idea; but if a student is unable to do this, please commit to regular exercise as a way of acclimating for fall practice.

We suggest a minimum of fourteen days of exercise prior to the beginning of fall practice. This can be accomplished by CES Training, participating in summer basketball/lacrosse, playing in a sports league, or a personal workout regimen.

Basketball Practice

The boys’ basketball team will have non-mandatory practices during the summer. Due to the flooding in Grand Hall, we are unsure of the location for summer practice, but will convey that information as it develops. Practices are conducted each Tuesday and Thursday during the summer except for the last week in June and the first week in July. These practices will conclude July 24. This is for boys grades 6 through 8. The schedule is summarized below:

June 3, 5, 10, 12, 17, 19, 24, 26                        6:30 – 8:00 pm
July 8, 10, 15, 17, 22, 24                                   6:30 – 8:00 pm

Competitive Edge Sports Training

Sports training for all interested athletes this summer will be conducted at Competitive Edge Sports, located on 12211 Kirby Drive (288 South on Airport Road). The athletes who went through CES training during this past spring were very pleased with the increased strength, speed and explosiveness which resulted. CES has the full endorsement of our coaching staff, and has been a tremendous asset for Presbyterian athletes. The CES methodology combines resistance and over speed running, while focusing on form and footwork to develop strength, increase speed/explosiveness, increase power and balance, and to reduce the risk of injury. We strongly recommend your participation in this program during the summer. The results will greatly increase your chances of success in the fall. The training is for all 6th-8th graders (boys and girls).

Please enroll your student on their website, www.CESperformance.com or call (713) 568-8938. A Presbyterian School coach will be present for all sessions. CES training begins May 19 on Mondays and Thursdays, 11 am to noon. Summer CES training is every Monday and Thursday until July 31. We do not train the week of July 4. We suggest car-pools as no transportation will be provided during the summer. On May 19 and 22, the sessions will be after school, 4:00 to 5:00 pm. On May 19 and 22, we will provide bus transportation to CES which will return at 5:30 pm to Presbyterian.
