Presbyterian School (PS) and First Presbyterian Church (FPC) share a rich history rooted in a mutual vision of education, faith, and community. Since its founding, Presbyterian School has been a vital part of First Presbyterian Church’s mission to create a nurturing, Christ-centered environment for families in Houston.
The History of Presbyterian School and First Presbyterian Church
The connection between Presbyterian School and First Presbyterian Church dates back to 1986 when Dr. John William Lancaster, Senior Pastor of FPC, assembled a School Study Committee. The committee was tasked with evaluating the feasibility of establishing an Early Childhood and Lower School on the church campus. Driven by the vision to offer a faith-based, educational environment for families in the Houston area, Presbyterian School was officially founded in 1988. A year later, in the fall of 1989, the school opened its doors, offering its first classes on the FPC campus.
Since then, Presbyterian School has grown, continuing to uphold its founding purpose: providing a “Christ-centered learning environment in which the total family will experience support and growth.” The school remains deeply intertwined with the church, both in terms of shared space and mission, and this partnership is celebrated throughout the year.
Presbyterian School Sunday: A Celebration of Partnership
One significant celebration of this partnership is Presbyterian School Sunday, which takes place annually at First Presbyterian Church. This event brings together the entire PS and FPC community for a morning of worship, fellowship, and mutual celebration.
Families are invited to attend any of the three services held at FPC on this special Sunday, where students from PS participate by reading scripture and singing in the choirs. Each service—whether the Convergent Service at 8:15 a.m., the Contemporary Service at 10:45 a.m., or the Traditional Service at 11:00 a.m.—features performances by different school choirs, highlighting the talents and spiritual growth of PS students.
In addition to the services, a Meet & Greet Breakfast is hosted in the Fellowship Hall, offering families the opportunity to meet FPC staff and learn more about the church’s ministries. The event is designed to foster connections between the church and school communities, underscoring the shared values and mission that bind them together.
Families of Presbyterian School are encouraged to attend Presbyterian School Sunday to experience firsthand the deep and enduring partnership between the school and the church.
Ongoing Collaborative Events Throughout the Year
The partnership between Presbyterian School and First Presbyterian Church extends far beyond Presbyterian School Sunday. Throughout the year, both communities collaborate on a range of events, activities, and shared initiatives that support spiritual and educational development for students and families alike.
-
Chapel and Bible Curriculum: Presbyterian School’s Chapel and Bible classes mirror the church’s children and youth ministries. Both use the same Bible translation and implement curriculums such as ThinkOrange, Sparkhouse, and Alpha for Youth. The 7th grade Bible and Faith curriculum at PS is also used for FPC’s Confirmation class.
-
Community Outreach: Both PS and FPC are deeply committed to serving their community. Together, they support local organizations such as the Nehemiah Center, Emergency Aid Coalition, Main Street Ministries, and the Summer Institute. These partnerships reinforce their shared mission to make a positive impact on the greater Houston area.
-
Parent Education and Events: FPC and PS jointly offer parent education programs and community-building events. These range from Bible studies to social gatherings like Parents’ Night Out, providing opportunities for spiritual growth and fellowship among families. Additionally, FPC annually gifts Bibles to all PS students in PK3 and 1st grade, reinforcing the integration of faith into the educational experience.
-
FPC Staff Involvement at PS: The church’s staff members are actively involved in the life of the school, serving as chapel speakers, Bible study leaders, coaches, and chaperones for class trips. This level of engagement strengthens the bond between the school and the church.
-
Class Ambassadors: FPC has designated Class Ambassadors, who are both FPC members and PS parents, to help bridge communication between the church and school families. These ambassadors share opportunities for PS families to engage with the church, enhancing the sense of community and collaboration.
Together, these shared initiatives deepen the connection between PS and FPC, creating a vibrant environment for learning, growth, and fellowship.
