"The commitment to be the hands and feet of Christ directly in our neighborhood is what drives us," shares Brenton Smith, highlighting the deep-rooted partnership between the Nehemiah Center and the PS community. "And just this opportunity that we have to invest deeper in the children of our city," she continues. "It's just been such a natural partnership because it's just two blocks away."
The primary purpose of the book drive is simple yet profound: to provide at-risk children with access to books and encourage them to build their own home libraries. What sets this initiative apart is the active involvement of fourth-grade students, who not only head the school wide book drive, but also engage with preschoolers at the Nehemiah center every week. By reading to these younger children on a continual basis, the fourth graders share their enthusiasm for reading while forging meaningful connections.
"Many Nehemiah students get excited to see us coming back and ask their teachers when their buddies are coming," remarks Smith. "And so it's just been a real great investment over the years that we're continuing to build upon. They've experienced love through both us and through God and we are so grateful that we get the chance to serve in that way."
The Nehemiah center, a cornerstone of the community, serves as the backdrop for this heartwarming collaboration. Here, fourth graders not only interact with preschoolers but also witness firsthand the impact of their donations. Through this hands-on experience, they learn the power of generosity and compassion, realizing that their actions can make a tangible difference in the lives of others. Last year, the initiative provided 13 books to each child, laying the foundation for their personal libraries. This year, that number shot up to 22 books per Nehemiah student. This direct impact underscores the significance of the Nehemiah Book Fair and Book Drive in spreading the love of reading and fostering a culture of literacy within the community.
"One might wonder why fourth graders specifically are chosen for this endeavor. The answer lies in their unique position—bridging the gap between childhood and adolescence, they possess the empathy and maturity needed to connect with younger children," explains Smith. The initiative reinforces the importance of reading at a crucial stage in their development. It instills in them a sense of responsibility and ownership, empowering them to be stewards of literacy within their community.
As Brenton Smith affirms, the impact of this initiative extends far beyond the simple act of donating books. It is about nurturing a love for reading, fostering empathy, and empowering young leaders to make a difference in the lives of others through character development. PS can exemplify the power of collaboration, compassion, and partnership that directly changes the lives of our neighbors. The book fair serves as a shining example of how small acts of kindness can ripple outward, leaving an indelible mark on the community. By engaging fourth graders in meaningful service opportunities, this initiative not only enriches the lives of preschoolers but also shapes the future leaders of tomorrow, imbuing them with the values of empathy, generosity, and a lifelong love for reading.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the families who contributed to our book drive. Your remarkable generosity has made a significant impact on the Nehemiah community. Thanks to your kind donations, Nehemiah students will now have the opportunity to enrich their personal home libraries with an astounding total of 22 books each. The outpouring of support has been truly inspiring, with a collection totaling 875 preschool books and over 300 lower school and middle school books. These contributions will undoubtedly foster a love for reading and learning among these students for years to come. All remaining books will be donated to Books Between Kids providing books for at-risk children to build their own home libraries. Thank you for helping us empower these young learners through the gift of literature.
