In our fast-paced, technology-driven world, it can be challenging for families to navigate the balance between screen time and the essential childhood need for play. This issue is at the forefront of our Parent Education Series this year, as we explore what children truly need to thrive in today’s world. Drawing from the latest research, including themes from The Anxious Generation, we are diving into how overprotection in the real world, paired with under-protection in the virtual one, has contributed to heightened anxiety among children born after 1995.
Our discussions focus on how modern parenting often limits free, unsupervised play, a crucial element in developing perseverance, courage, and problem-solving skills. At the same time, our children are increasingly exposed to the pressures and anxieties of a screen-dominated childhood. These themes intersect deeply with Presbyterian School’s six core values: perseverance, courage, integrity, gratitude, respect, and compassion, which are central to both our academic mission and our parent education efforts.
As part of this initiative, our faculty and staff have been digging deeper during division meetings to discuss how we can bring more play-based, experiential learning to our students' daily lives. We understand the importance of reducing screen time and allowing children the freedom to explore, make mistakes, and grow in environments that prioritize discovery over digital engagement. By encouraging more outdoor play, creative problem-solving, and less reliance on screens during the school day, we aim to foster resilience and independence in our students—traits that will serve them well throughout their lives.
The Parent Education Program is proud to offer a series of engaging talks and discussions aimed at equipping parents with the tools they need to support their children in a rapidly changing world. Our topics are carefully curated to reflect the needs of parents across all divisions of the school, ensuring that Early Childhood, Lower, and Middle School families alike benefit from the wisdom and insights shared. This holistic approach allows us to address a variety of challenges, from managing screen time and fostering independence to cultivating strong character traits aligned with our core values.
We invite all members of our community to join us in this ongoing journey of learning and growth. Together, we can ensure that our children are equipped with the skills they need to navigate both the real and virtual worlds with confidence, resilience, and a deep sense of purpose.
As always, we are committed to not only educating our students but also to supporting and empowering the families who stand behind them.
