Our early childhood specialists spend time each week with students expanding upon the classroom offerings. For younger learners, we know play and imagination are essential to learning. At PS, superb Early Childhood teachers set children on a path of intentional learning that feels like play, so students delight in the boundless potential of each school day
One of the distinguishing aspects of PS is the daily physical education (PE) class. Unlike many schools where PE is sporadic, PS recognizes the importance of consistent physical activity in a child's development. The daily PE classes allow for a quicker pace of skill-building, providing students with a strong foundation in physical fitness. Ann Horne, Director of PE and Wellness, expresses her joy in seeing students master new skills, creating a positive and supportive learning environment.
The learning commons at PS is a hub of interactive and enriching activities. Aligned with the institution's core values, the program focuses on motivating, encouraging, and advocating for literacy in a fun and instructional manner. Leslie Hemenway, the Early Childhood and Lower School Librarian, highlights the joy of seeing students help each other find great books and experience the thrill of realizing they can read. The interactive nature of the learning commons allows students to strengthen their reading comprehension skills while also supporting classroom instruction.
Chapel time at PS is not just a routine; it's a captivating and enriching experience for both students and educators. Beginning each chapel by greeting God is a unique aspect that fosters a sense of constant connection with a higher power. Early Childhood and Lower School Chaplain, Brenton Smith, describes the playful elements in chapel sessions, where singing songs in slow motion, laughter, and creative dance movements are integral. The genuine and heartfelt singing of each child adds a special dimension to the spiritual atmosphere, creating powerful bonding experiences for families.
Early Childhood music at Presbyterian School is a delightful journey filled with wonder and play. The program is designed to be inherently joyful, embracing the belief that learning through music should be an enchanting experience for young minds. Early Childhood Music Teacher, Vasti Atkins, shares her joy in witnessing students' eyes light up and smile during their favorite songs. The magic of music extends beyond vocal expressions; it is a full-body experience, evident in the delightful movements and dances that naturally emerge during these musical sessions.
One of the unique approaches Brandy Collins, the Early Childhood Art Teacher, employs in her classes is linking famous painters to their childhoods. By relating a renowned artist's early years to the lives of her young students, she helps them understand that these celebrated figures were once just like them—children with dreams. It's a way to demystify history and make it more relatable for her students, particularly those in Pre K Airlines, who get lessons tailored to their location, such as Italian artists when studying in Italy or Colombian artists when in Colombia. Brandy ensures that her students explore a variety of art forms, from watercolors to sculpting, collages, and texture rubbings, encouraging them to experiment with different materials and techniques. This approach fosters creativity and allows young minds to discover their artistic preferences. To preserve the students' artistic journeys, Brandy compiles their artwork into a book that they can take home at the end of the kindergarten year. "This not only safeguards their creations but also provides a visual record of their artistic growth from PK3 to PK4 and finally kindergarten. It's a collection that children and their parents can cherish." Additionally, she displays student art in the hallways with informational signs, mimicking the experience of visiting a museum. The children's art becomes the center of attention, encouraging parents to engage in conversations with their child about the artist, the artwork, and the techniques involved. This approach extends the learning experience from the classroom to the home.
At Presbyterian School, we embrace a play-based hands-on approach that actively involves children in constructing their learning. Recognizing play as a fundamental tool for nurturing curiosity, fostering creativity, and building a strong foundation, our philosophy is grounded in research-backed evidence that highlights the academic and developmental benefits of play-based learning. In this approach, young minds effectively transfer knowledge from short-term to long-term memory—a crucial step in building a reservoir of understanding that can be drawn upon for future reference. We celebrate the transformative power of play, viewing it as a cornerstone for cultivating a lifelong love of learning in our students.
