The process kicks off in the spring when Brandon and his team meet with rising eighth grade students and their parents. This initial meeting provides an introduction to the high school admissions process and tips on how to get started. Parents are advised to start exploring high school websites and are introduced to resources that can help their children prepare.
Workshops and Intensive Sessions
Once summer ends and students return from the Colorado trip, the guidance team hosts a workshop for parents and eighth graders. This workshop is designed to be interactive and high-touch, allowing families to rotate through four different stations. Each station addresses critical components of the admissions process, including ISEE prep, essay writing, engaging with admissions offices, and the practical steps of submitting applications.
We work with the admissions office to put on the HS Guidance Workshop so that everyone can bring in their unique expertise and experience. These sessions aim to peel back the curtain on the process and dispel common rumors. By providing real-life examples of past students' experiences, the team hopes to empower families so that they leave with a clearer understanding of what to expect and how to best prepare.
Ongoing Support: Zooms and High School Visits
The support doesn't end with the workshop! Every few weeks, the team hosts Zoom sessions where parents can get answers to lingering questions. Additionally, visits with high schools are organized so students can experience a variety of schools. Families are encouraged to visit and learn about many schools before deciding where to apply.
Guidance During Advisory Periods
Throughout the year, the team offers high school guidance seminars during students’ advisory and wellness periods. These sessions cover various topics, including managing expectations and how to be supportive of friends going through the same stressful process. The team emphasizes the importance of staying engaged in the process without letting it overwhelm the students’ eighth grade year.
The Goal: Reducing Anxiety and Providing Clarity
The guidance team recognizes that high school admissions can be a source of stress for some families. Their primary goal is to alleviate this anxiety by providing clear guidance and demystifying the process. “The reality is our kids do matriculate into fantastic schools, and when families and students engage appropriately, they usually have options,” Brandon explains. By equipping students and parents with the right tools, the team aims to make this transition smoother and more manageable.
The support extends beyond students to include teachers as well. The team ensures that teachers have dedicated time to write thoughtful and detailed recommendations for over 75 students, which is essential to the application process. The guidance program also addresses emotional preparedness by exploring scenarios such as not getting into a top school choice or supporting friends who face disappointment. Students are encouraged to reflect on what it means to be a good friend during such challenging times.
High school admissions is a journey filled with anticipation, anxiety, and excitement. Through a well-structured approach, the guidance team provides invaluable advice that helps students and their families navigate this pivotal time with confidence. By demystifying the process, offering ongoing support, and preparing students thoroughly, they ensure that families are not only ready for the challenges ahead but are also able to celebrate the opportunities that come their way. As Brandon puts it, “We want to walk alongside families to make this process a little less anxiety-inducing. It’s a significant benchmark in a student’s life, and with the right support, it can be a positive experience.”
