"In PK4, our students soar to new heights aboard PK Airlines as they enter an enriching exploration of the world's diverse cultures. Through rich social studies-based thematic units, we ignite their imagination through a play-based approach while nurturing foundational literacy, mathematical, and social-emotional skills," shares PK4 teacher, Jillian Schertle. "These journeys serve as a launching point for learning and cultivating collaboration, communication, creativity, and problem-solving abilities."
This week's expedition to the Houston Museum of Natural Science transported our students back in time to the majestic land of ancient Egypt. Amidst the sprawling Hall of Ancient Egypt, spanning over 10,000 square feet, they embarked on a journey through history and tradition. Guided by their insatiable curiosity, they delved into the heart of Egyptian civilization, uncovering the secrets of the Nile River and the intricacies of daily life.
"I loved seeing how my students rose to the expectations of a museum setting. It's amazing to see the connections they make with the content and how they eagerly share their insights with others," remarks Jillian Schertle. "In addition, they are able to practice skills specific to a museum setting, such as respecting others in the museum, observation skills, and self-control."
As they marveled at artifacts showcasing the elegance and sophistication of ancient Egyptian society, the students discovered parallels between the exhibit and what they are learning in the classrooms. From ornate jewelry to intricate crafts and weaponry, every exhibit offered a window into a world brimming with ingenuity and creativity. "My favorite part was King Tut's Mummy! It looked way more than a mummy. Mummies are supposed to be wrapped up and King Tut wasn’t." exclaimed PK4 student, Harrison. Amidst a treasure trove of amulets, statues, and funerary items, they gained a deeper understanding of the Egyptian beliefs and traditions. From decorated coffins to preserved mummies spanning various eras, the students were captivated by the rituals and customs surrounding death and burial.
In addition to their journey through the Hall of Ancient Egypt, the students had the privilege of visiting the special exhibition of King Tut's Tomb. Guided by the intrepid Howard Carter, they embarked on a virtual expedition to the Valley of the Kings, where they beheld the wonders of Tutankhamen's burial chambers. Amidst golden treasures and vivid hieroglyphs, they witnessed the timeless legacy of Egypt's most famous pharaoh.
As they concluded their expedition, the students departed with a newfound appreciation for the enduring legacy of ancient Egypt and the universal themes that unite humanity across time and space. Through their exploration of art, music, food, and language, they discovered that, despite our differences, we are bound together by a shared heritage and a collective journey through history.
At PS, we are proud to provide our students with opportunities for experiential learning that ignite their curiosity and foster a lifelong love of exploration. By traversing the globe with Pre-K Airlines, our students embark on a transformative journey of discovery, where every destination becomes a gateway to new horizons and endless possibilities.
