Early Childhood and Lower School Music Teacher, Vasti Adkins, is taking students beyond the vocal and performing outlets to a behind the scenes approach to music-making. A surge of student interest has led to the creation of a unique and innovative course called the Panther Music Lab. In 5th grade students have the opportunity to choose between participating in Panther Singers (advanced choir) or Panther Music Lab. The choice in music class is designed to accommodate students whose passion lies in performing and singing as well as the students who enjoy exploring music-making through a technical lens.
The Panther Music Lab course dives into music fundamentals of composing music and arranging new songs. The class utilizes digital platforms and classroom instruments in addition to literature to engage students in cross-disciplinary, project-based learning. “Students are exposed to contemporary music production techniques, utilizing platforms such as Noteflight and Soundtrap. The emphasis is on fostering 21st-century music-making skills, encouraging collaboration, and nurturing creativity.” says Vasti.
The tech-heavy nature of the class requires that students use their iPads in every session to engage with powerful platforms. Soundtrap, in particular, stands out as a kid-friendly studio created by Spotify, allowing students to create not only music but also podcasts—a creative avenue that sparks excitement.
Vasti shared anecdotes from the classroom, recounting experiences of students creating music that ranges from rock to lo-fi chill, all while working on a common melody. “Last year's highlight involved an innovative project where students underscored a book by studying literary devices and composing music to enhance the storytelling.” she shared. This hands-on approach to music composition, with a focus on storytelling, showcases the depth and creativity fostered in Panther Music Lab. (Click here to see the final products).
Vasti shares insights into their current project—students arranging the timeless melody of "Ode to Joy" in diverse and imaginative ways. The collaborative spirit of the class shines through as students seek feedback, inviting friends to contribute their thoughts. Vasti's dedication to showcasing students' work is evident in the finished projects shared with parents via links on a website she created. Check out the class portfolio here.
The option to take Panther Music Lab not only enables students to have choice in their music education but also serves as a transformative experience where young minds can explore the realms of technology, composition, and collaboration. It has become clear that Panther Music Lab is not just a class; it's a vibrant community where students find joy in creative expression and thrive in the world of collaborative music composition.
